Mouthguards
If you participate in any type of contacts sports, Dentists recommend wearing a mouthguard as it plays a vital role in tooth injury prevention. A step up from a standard over the counter mouthguard is a custom mouthguard. A well fitted mouth guard helps in absorbing the shock experienced by a blow to the face, which might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw.
Why are custom mouth guards important?
Research from a 2019 study showed that people are 60 times more likely to suffer harm to their teeth during sports when they don’t wear a mouth guard. Although wearing a standard mouthguard will help protect your teeth, not all mouthguards are made the same and the majority of mouthguards you can buy over the counter are not large enough to cover all teeth and allow for maximum protection. Custom mouthguards play a vital role in reducing the risk of jaw fractures and concussions, which can occur due to the force of impact in contact sports.
How are custom mouth guards made?
Custom mouth guards are made through a process called dental impressions. The first step is to book an appointment with one of our clinicians at Tulip Dental, we will take an impression of your teeth and create a plaster model of their mouth. We will then use the plaster model to create a custom-fitted mouth guard.
Tulip Dental will select the material for the mouth guard based on the athlete’s needs and preferences. The most common materials used are thermoplastic, laminated, and pressure-laminated mouth guards. At Tulip Dental we use Laminated mouth guards, these consist of layers of plastic fused together, providing extra durability and protection.
Can I customise the colour?
Of course! The material we use to create your mouthguard comes in an array of colours and even some patterned or multi-coloured designs.
We can also create a variety of designs to put on your mouthguards such as team names, personal names, pictures etc
